[The Alex Wilson Sect] Driver had never sung in a band before he joined 'The Set' in early 1966. In contrast, Smith-Howell had been with popular Great Yarmouth beat bands The Ramblers and The Spectres. The group never featured anyone called Alex Wilson, the name was derived from bass player Wilson living on Alexander Road in Beccles.

Under the watchful eye of manager Tony Baker [aka Boney Taker], the band were kept busy throughout 1967. Baker remembers when the group backed Pink Floyd at The Floral Hall, Gorleston. "Floyd turned up late and didn't have a soundcheck, when it was time for the band to go on, they were far too loud and people started to leave, they left the stage early and The Set [Alex Wilson Set] had to retake the stage to finish the night."

In May that year, they were joined by Moore who had previously been with The Soul Concern, but his stay is short, and he leaves in February 1968 to join The Toby Jug Band. The group reshuffle in May 1968 and become known as Kiss.
