7th March 2014 - Mark Newman talks about how Zorro formed:
"The original line-up of Zorro was largely due to Ray Smith who, in the 70's, was the piano player with Norwich's answer to Showaddywaddy, "Memphis Index" and also the owner of Norwich Sound Systems, a band instruments shop situated on Prince of Wales Road in those days. Ray was a really great bloke and a central figure in the Norwich rock music scene in the 70's.
Terry Bunting and John Kirk often frequented Ray's shop which was a bit of a Muzo's meeting place in those days. I also used to get all my PA equipment from Ray and often used to hang around in his shop too. In early 1975, after leaving my first ever village band in Blofield, I considered giving up singing in bands altogether to concentrate on my day job. When I told Ray about this, he somewhat surprisingly went ballistic and firmly instructed me that this would be some kind of life changing mistake! He subsequently insisted that he would find a band of like minded musicians who needed a singer.
Two weeks later, two very long haired musicians walked into my very conservative place of work and invited me to join their new rock band. These two musicians were Terry Bunting and John Kirk. There was an instantaneous and almost spiritual synergy between us and, after we had invited Kevin Longman to leave his post as lead singer of "The Hat Band" and join us on bass and backing vocals, the band was named "Zorro" by John Kirk in the Rose Valley Tavern on Unthank Road in 1975. The name "Zorro" was decided upon by anonymously writing potential names on the back of beer mats and then casting votes on each one!
In terms of music industry wisdom, we were all greener than grass and would have been over the moon to have achieved one gig a week if we worked very hard at it. That was the actual the plan which was hatched in the Rose Valley Tavern! What we were totally unaware of was the "chemistry" which Zorro had as a band. We had accidentally stumbled on the perfect blend of personality and musical ability. Whatever skill or personal attribute one member lacked, one or more of the others were able to supply.
Terry was the heart of Zorro and had the ability to select the perfect set of cover versions to excite our audiences as well as exploiting our individual musical abilities. His boundless enthusiasm was also infectious for the band as well as our audiences. Kevin was a great bass player and singer and a natural business manager with an office and a phone. He developed our "business" like a pro. John was a very down to earth character who kept our egos in check once Zorro had started to take-off locally."
The changes as per EEN H&N announcement:
The first change in the four piece was the addition of Dave Galen Littlewood who joined from Yarmouth glam band Poacher in [date required]. In August 1978 Drummer 'Fritz' Wright leaves the band for personal reasons (small Ad in EEN 16/08/78) and is replaced by Yarmouth punk percussionist Ricci Titcombe of The Crabs after they had split up. Titcombe plays his first gig at The Butter Market, Ipswich on 5th August 1978. Both guitarist Terry Bunting and bassist Kevin Longman leave in January 1979 completing the first full turnaround in personnel. They are replaced by Ricky Newson ex The Crabs and Alan Fish ex [band required] respectively.
