About the Archive
The East Anglian Music Archive was founded by Kingsley Harris in 1982 under the name Local Band Research. In 1990 it became Project Eastzone 2000, and finally in 1998 The East Anglian Music Archive. Despite the name changes the Archive’s mission has always been the same and that is to research, collect and catalogue recordings, data and artefacts of the influential and contemporary music scenes of Norfolk, Suffolk and Cambridgeshire.
The Archive’s aim is to provide public access to nearly 38 years of research by creating an enjoyable and educational heritage website – a free public source of social history.
The Archive is a not for profit organisation and relies on volunteers, donations and fundraising projects to complete its tasks.
How the Archive Works!
The Archive is a research project looking at the roots of parochial music and its social development between 1950 and 2015, although we do capture and log information that comes our way either side of those dates. Although there are no borders with regards to the subject we loosely confine our research to the areas of Norfolk, Suffolk and Cambridgeshire (inc Peterborough) and any border areas thereafter (at Archive discretion). We regard this as East Anglia despite any elected definitions that may exist. The Archive has pro-actively collected data* over the last 4 decades and is slowly loading this material onto this website, be aware the website only currently contains a fraction of what the Archive has collected with many updates and additions to come. Our remit is to build up a picture of the various scenes by going through the regional papers and any related magazines backed up by personal interviews with band members. If you feel you can add something to the Archive we would like to hear from you.
Some popular questions:
Q1: Do you have to be born in East Anglia to be included?
A1: No - Where you were born has no bearing on the project as long as your band operated in the areas we cover. It would be obvious though that a great many of the people in the database are natives. - No prizes for that.
Q2: I'm in an orchestra, is this OK?
A2: Yes, although we do not proactively collect information on Orchestras and larger bands we are happy to include the information should it be submitted.
Q3: What genres/styles are you interested in?
A3: All styles/ All Genres. The Archive does not use industry-standard descriptions so you may have to simplify your description but essentially nothing is off-limits.
Q4: Why can I not change and manage my own band page?
A4A: The Archive is a research project and has to be able to relate back to its research. We keep all data gathered correct and incorrect something we hope to be able to eventually separate out on each page.
A4B: The original site allowed this function which saw a few people vandalising pages.
Q5: I do not like/agree with something written on my personal/band page. How do I change this?
A5: It is never the Archives intention to offend or print incorrect information. We have an open-ended research policy to allow changes at any time. However, constantly swapping out one version of events for another does not work either. We have found over the years that everyone has a different version of events and we like to give everybody a chance to tell theirs and happy to feature alternative points of view if put forward in a constructive manner.

Submit your data
The first thing you should know is that you cannot directly go onto any page and add or delete information like Wikipedia. This is a research project and keeps multiple sets of data under a remit, which you are entitled to add to if you were a member of, or directly connected to the subject you are leaving the information for.
1. Every band page has a Facebook box that you can type directly into and when submitted it will appear on the page of the band. Feel free to type in corrections and additions or copy and paste any biographies. Please do not submit material you do not own the copyright to and do not add external links to these boxes as they will be deleted. (see photographs)
2. Not on Facebook! At the bottom of every band page, there is a black bar. Press this to add information by email. This will title your information when sending it over and allow us to update your information quicker. (see photographs)
Photographs:
The Archive has many thousands of photographs but can only use those that are covered by its remit, although I must add we are happy to store and archive all pictures that are sent or donated to us through the correct channels relevant to the project. Our remit is only to acquire one good* picture of each line-up of a band, venue, poster, ticket, musician or release.
*Because the Archive produces books and other printed works as well as having an internet presence we need good quality scans. The pictures should be set square and scanned to a minimum resolution of 300. We only accept Tiffs & JPegs.
If you cannot scan your pictures the Archive can do it at no cost to you and will cover all costs - please email the Archive for details.
If you have any queries about submitting details or the above information please contact Kingsley Harris - [email protected]
Important Note
Don't throw anything out!
You won't believe the amount of times we talk to people about their music years and they say "We'll i threw it all out, i didn't think anyone would be interested in it!"
