The Tempos were put together in May 1964 when bassist Holgate heard that The Samson & Hercules BR, Nch would soon be looking for a resident band to replace The Joe Gordon Trio for the summer season and become the second ensemble to The Ken Stevens Orchestra. Holgate hastily pulled in some Cambridge based personnel he had previously played with and got the job. The band were soon joined by Scottish born guitarist Urquhart, who had previously been playing in Walthamstow, London with The Blue Dukes, along with future Dave Clark saxophonist Dennis Payton. Despite a succession of different drummers, the group remained in residence at the club for four years before being offered the chance of a residency at The Lyceum BR, The Strand, London, as second ensemble to Joe Loss. The band played their last gig at The Samson & Hercules BR on 4 March 1967, with Thompson replacing Russell on drums the week before. Russell had decided to stay in Norwich and remained at The Samson & Hercules BR, joining the resident big band The Ken Stevens Orchestra. The group remained in London until taking up a residency at Tiffany’s in Bristol around June 1967. Urquhart stayed in London with The Ronnie Smith Band until returning to Norwich in April 1968 to join The Ken Stevens Orchestra, still in residence at The Samson & Hercules. After this point, the group replenished their ranks with local musicians and renamed themselves Rainbow People.
