The original five-piece, Murray and the Mynts, honed their craft in their bassist’s garage in Ipswich before hitting the East Anglian pubs, clubs and airbases with a set of blues and rock ’n’ roll covers. The band’s drummer Arnold said, “This would have been around 1964, none of the band was old enough to drive so getting to gigs was hard. The band all had parkas and scooters, so I guess you could say we were a mod band. We started as Murray and the Mynts and gradually evolved into The Shapes of Things.” In 1966 the band were joined by Gill on guitar who replaced Moores and blues harp player and vocalist Lavene, both had previously played for Dizzy Heights. It was this new six-piece line-up that recorded the demo tracks Striving and You Must Believe In Me. “The tracks were supposed to be for record labels and promotion but they got shelved. In 2009 we were contacted by the Acid Jazz label and they ended up on one of their mod compilations,” Gill recalls. The band played their final gig at The Tower BR, Gt. Yarmouth on 15 January 1967.
