[Al Garner’s Mustard City Stompers] This band started out as the The Gibraltar JB resident at The Gibraltar Jazz Club at (you guessed it!) The Gibraltar Gardens PH, Nch in late 1953. In May 1954 the group are first seen as The Mustard City Stompers and resident group of the newly established Norwich Jazz Club, which was opened in the basement of The Orford Cellar, and was the first time the cellar was used to host music. The club found it hard to locate a permanent home and moved several times before settling at The Bedford Arms PH, Nch in January 1958. The band’s leader and organiser was trumpet player Al Garner. Garner’s family took over the running of The Bedford in ?? 19?? although the Club left the venue in March 1964. The group featured many guest artists and musicians, the line up we have is taken from articles published in 1955 and 1959, along with any listed local singers we have seen advertised with the band. The group disappears from our radar in April 1964 but reform in November 1965 for a monthly appearance at The Firs PH, Nch, until late 1966.
