The Square Roots played their first gig on 2 July 1965 at Lawford Place Research Station near Manningtree also playing that night were The Shades of Blue. In 1966 the line-up changed with Brian Gordon coming in on vocals and John Read replacing Martin Smith. We played Witham Public Hall on 16 April 1966, supporting Crispian St. Peters.....When his band didn't show up as delayed in traffic, The Square Roots actually backed him for the first set. I remember him running through his hit numbers You were on my Mind and Pied Piper with us in the changing room before going on stage! His band did eventually turn up and played the second set! Our last gig was at The Golden Lion, Ipswich on 2 July 1966.
