"I started out as lead singer with The Hat Band, then became friends with Richard Hill and Paul Crawford who were in the process of forming a band. So I left the Hat Band and we formed Preacher, recruiting Richard's brother Steve for drums and two or three different bassists over the next few months. We were a cover band doing Deep Purple, Free, Stones, Led Zep etc and played The Boar's Head, Whites etc. Richard Hill and I were inseperable for a while. The problem was that all the band were too friendly and because of that afraid to express an opinion about anything for fear of causing upset. So eventually I left to form Childe (incidentally I came up with that name - the original name was 'Childe Roland' from a line in Shakespeare's play King Lear). I think Preacher carried on for a while. I left Childe because I got a work transfer away, Richard Hill took over from me as lead vox and I think that was the end of Preacher." RE 27/02/2023
