Graham Kenneth Baynes was the name behind this new Acle based group The GKB Four back in July 1965. Graham had left popular east coast band The Spectres just prior to their demise.
The Spectres & The Sapphires were friendly enemies back in 1964 and John Butler points out that the two bands were the link between the Norwich and Great Yarmouth music scenes. The Sapphires had split in late 1964. Graham paid a visit to ex Sapphire John Butler. "He wanted to start his own band hence the name GKB, Graham Kenneth Baynes" Starts John. "He had drummer Brian Cunningham lined up but in the end he never joined. I had heard of Dave Willgress who had made a few guest appearances with groups and we gave him the job despite not having a drum kit, so he borrowed one until buying his own set, and it was David Willgress who knew guitarist David George who switched to bass to join the group."
The group were soon up and running and featured in the Talent Spot of the Here & Now page of the evening news in September 1965. The groups manager at the time was Robert Costessy and in [date required] he replaced David George on bass.
John points out a link between the The Sapphires and The GKB Four. "It was The Sapphires that played the last gig at the Old Stracy Arms PH, Tunstead before they pulled it down, and it was the GKB Four that played the first Gig in the new Stracy Arms." In [month required] 1966 Graham exclaimed that he wanted to change the groups name and David Willgress came up with Exhibit A.
