Pictured in the NM&J on 24 July 1964 under the heading The Avalons search for that ‘new sound’. They rehearsed at the home of the Watts family at Elm Gables, Green Lane, Rackheath, Nch. Mr Watts senior said of the venture, “I’m keen to see the boys get on.” Watts junior was an apprentice carpenter and Hewkins an apprentice draughtsman, both said that they wanted to complete their apprenticeships before going professional. The band play their first gig at Rackheath VH, Nch on 31 July 1964. Mr Watts added, “If the gig goes well we would be happy to play every Friday for free to raise money for the Village Hall.” Utting comes in later joining from The Roadrunners although band members soon appeared in other groups, In particular Castle and Hewkins, who joined up with ex Hangmen to form The Cynics.

NB: Not to be confused with the Slough, Berkshire, based outfit, who formed in March 1962 then subsequently signed to EMI and were seen playing Grosvenor BR, Nch in late 1963.
