Derrick Townsend was brought up in Silfield, Wymondham and attended Wymondham Secondary Modern. His interest in music stem from the days he used to sneak into the Cross Keys pub and while totally illegaly downing half an ale, albeit sitting next to the local bobby, he watched the likes of the Ace of Clubs.

It was their drummer at the time, Albert Redgrave who taught Derrick his first rudiments. Derrick then formed the Satalites but does not recall the rest of the band by name except for the Guitarists lived at East Harling and called Bud with his brother on bass. The band however came to an abrupt end in 196X when the lead singer joined the RAF. Derrick then auditioned, succesfully at The Firs, Public house for Vic Keeler’s alias Mark Prestons Vendors
