"The group formed while at CNS School. Sam McCarthy (guitar) and Vince Webster (drums) both ex Distortion, linked up with Bob Barrell (bass) from links at school and drinking in The Mitre PH (Earlham Road, Nch - now closed). All were into the post punk, hardcore scene and went regularly to The Gala (St Stephens, Nch - now Megazone) to see bands. They needed a singer so Vince persuaded his brother in law Peter Strike, one of the original Nch punks and a few years older than rest to become vocalist.
Sam wrote most of the early music and melodies and Pete added the words. Bob left the band after a year and Fiddy, in same year as Sam and Vince at CNS, took over on bass. I later later joined as 2nd guitarist, but this did not work out and Fiddy left the band and I switched to bass for the final line up. Highlights for me were supporting The Alarm at UEA and releasing our 12” EP Guilty in 1985 (on our own label). We also supported King Kurt in Lowestoft, played several gigs around the county and many for the NVC Norwich Venue Campaign.
Peter left the band in 1986 after his first born and Sam, Vin and I continued for a while until Sam and I decided the band should move to London. Vin stayed behind so David Donley joined on drums. Sam took over lead vocals and as a three piece the band played a few London gigs before changing the name to Dawn Patrol, gigging extensively in London and the Southern counties and coast with a few returns to Norwich. the group finally split in late 1988 when Sam moved to the States." “I was quite active in Norwich bands in the 80s and early 90s before I moved to Asia. My first band were called The Innocent Bystanders around 1980...I played guitar for them. Next up were The Legend who later changed their name Rebel Truce who I played bass for around 1983." RB 15/05/2020
