The band had started life as trio FBI / The Criminals and then became The Sonics, but quickly changed to The New Sonics when it occurred that a group from Diss were already playing under that name. The trio of musicians hooked up with vocal trio The Aytones who had been together since 196?
The band advertise for a female vocalist approx age 15 in the evening news on the 28/01/1965. Our first glimpse of the group came in [date required] when a photograph of the band featured in the Eastern Evening News about taking part in a charity concert, sadly no line-up details were included. In March 1965 the group entered the Norwich Mercury beat contest and auditioned in round two at the Gala on 11th May 1965 and despite not winning a place in the grand final the band were placed 3rd on the night
The group had a monthly residency at the now demolished Fellmongers, Norwich in the Stump Cross area throughout 1966 and added Norma Webster on vocals in [date required] with some gigs around that time being listed as The Nu Sonics
In August 1967 the group changed their name to The Shade Of Pale later to become Norma and The Shade Of Pale
