"Yes that’s right! the singer was, called Mingo Grief" says founder member Mick Goward, “His name was far more spectacular than his performance”. He laughs. The band in this instance were for a time managed by Bernie Barton who was playing Bass for the Tea Time Four. Bernie was branching out and using his contacts to start his own management agency, The Morons were one of Bernies first projects. The Morons made two demo’s at Bob Boothes Tower street studio the first was to record the cover title Gloria and rock standard Love Potion No’9 then again two weeks later to record the Barton original I Don’t Wanna Be A Loser, Unfortunatly neither of the demo session were used to great effect.
The group would refer to Mick Goward as little Mick and Mick Turner as Big Mick, both Micks are on the left of the picture. I think it’s obvious who’s who. Despite the bands name they did have the last laugh by transforming into Micks Mode in June 1965 and for a while turning pro under the management of Kenny Lynch and later Larry Page of Page One Records and who also managed The Troggs. One of the groups last engagements as Moron Assortments as they were sometime advertised was to back The Hudson Hi Four at Kings Lynns Corn Exchange The Hi Four from Dundee stayed in East Anglia for some months becoming the Poor Souls and signing to Decca in [date required].
