After only two months rehearsal this embryonic trio had already performed for UEA's NEXUS TV as The Question. Ten days on the band have become The Mexican Bombers and play their first live gig at ??, Marlingford on the 17th May 1980. The name doesn't stick and seven days later they become Screen Three.
Notes by Neil Dyer
17th May 1980 First gig. Played second on a bill consisting of Plastic Sandwiches, us, Polish Corridor and Protective Measures. We went down very well and did an encore of ‘European Journey’. Great party – everybody drunk. Neighbours complained, Police came and went then came again. Max, Richard’s friend, in whose name the hall was booked, is likely to be charged with allowing under-aged drinking on hired premises and causing a disturbance. Jules of The Running Dogs was there and we got a gig at Beccles with them because he liked us. A great time and a great success. Taped the gig and Penny, Brett’s girlfriend, took some photos with my camera. Some of my friends came but missed our set so didn’t stay long. We’re going to change our name again though. I still have the recording I made, now transferred to a CD-R. Recorded on a small mono recorder I was given for my 16th birthday (which I also still have). Somebody got on stage between songs and yelled 'This is their first gig, so fucking dance!'
The drummer with The Plastic Sandwiches had a dinner fork sticking out of his jacket shoulder with fake blood painted around its entry point.
I remember a police car chasing kids through the grass field behind the hall at one point.
