"Alan was my cousin and in the late seventies, we were both learning to play. We had a few early attempts at putting a band together but it took time to get our sound right and find our direction. A few early projects went under the titles' Stallion, Stormbringer and Chainsaw. In 1979 we finally settled on Gunslinger and around the same time acquired Andrew Lamb on drums, he was known to my sister from school and we met up at a Motorhead concert. He turned out to be perfect for us! We continued until the mid-eighties. Our style has unsurprisingly been compared to Motorhead with Alan's biggest influence being Lemmy who he played with many times during his 20 years in Hawkwind but in truth, it was just that we were doing similar things at the same time.
Two demo tapes were recorded at Hillside Studios in Ipswich before Alan left to join Hawkwind. I then audition for Motorhead and Gunslinger ceased to be. I got down to the last eight of the auditions and later Alan reminded him of the audition and Lemmy gave Alan a ring to pass on. Merchants of Sorrow then formed out of Gunslinger.
Update: Gunslinger seemed lost to history until 2008 when Alan and I got together to record some of the songs we had written all those years ago. The project was an instant success and the album Earthquake In E Minor was released in both CD and vinyl format and is currently being re-released as a deluxe album by Cleopatra Records, LA, USA. The Hillside Studio demos are also to be released on vinyl by Cleopatra, shortly." NP 07/05/2020
