It was two trophies in two months for The Down Bound in 1958. The group took first prize at the Diss carnival in June and then another at the Conservative Association fete held at the Diss Manor House in August in front of 500 people. Undecided judge Reverend Basil Maine asked for a play-off between three of the bands; The Down Bound, The Down Beats from Bury and The Sideliners from Ipswich. After being presented with the prize Reverend Maine complimented the boys on their rhythm and told them to aim for individuality and not to copy others, he also told them not to hug the microphone or be to melancholy. It should be noted that Mr Maine was a top classical music biographer and had in the past been a vociferous critic of Jazz and Skiffle.
May and Runacres would later turn up in The Consorts beat group in the early sixties.
