Dobsonfly was formed in 2002 by four sixth form pupils at Gresham’s School, Holt. Singer and guitarist Chow was a boarder from Hong Kong. Lead guitarist Flower and bass player Walton both had parents working at the school, while drummer Jones was the daughter of a local farmer. After rehearsing assiduously, they started their live career with a gig at the Ferryboat in Norwich in April 2003. This was the first of about a dozen gigs mainly in North Norfolk, but also in Norwich and Kings Lynn, before their swansong at the Auden Theatre in Holt in March 2004. In 2003 Dobsonfly recorded a 4 song, eponymously titled E.P. at Magoo’s Sickroom studios which was released by local independent label Uproar Recordings. A limited edition video CD of highlights from their live performances followed in 2004 and was called ‘What Are We Doing?’ after Hannah’s inevitable squeak before starting any song. They went on hiatus in 2004 with A Levels looming and them leaving school which would break up the band anyway. Long distance collaboration while on gap years resulted in a new track called ‘Romance’, recorded on laptops in hotel rooms all over the planet and put together by Hugo. ‘Romance’ was released as the lead track on the 2006 ‘Across Hemispheres’ E.P. packaged with two previously unreleased 4-track demos from 2003. Post-Dobsonfly, Luke has been a member of popular Hong Kong bands Kai Hii Kitora (now defunct), Hungry Ghosts and Kestrels & Kites. Hannah is a composer and producer working mainly in electronic music. Hugo performs with the band Stereo Son and played guitar on the track ‘Hunt You Down’ from Mike And The Mechanics’ 2011 album ‘The Road’. [Guy Bartle ex Manager 18/11/2019]
