Shaw had previously been playing in The Layabouts, “I had taught my friend Richard Hale to play, and we formed The Fen Five in 1962 around St Marks Youth Club in Lincoln Road, Pboro. Our first proper booking was for Castor Young Farmers Club Social on 20 December 1963 at Castor Village Hall. No alcohol, just cucumber punch. The line-up inevitably changed when the Hales left Peterborough and Dave Everitt headed off to Agricultural College. They were replaced by Alan Fuzz Woolley on vocals, Tom Abondanza, then later Keith Toms, on rhythm guitar and Bernie Westwood on bass. We seemed to keep getting booked by the Gas Board’s Social Club, although Wolley did work for the Gas Board. We lasted until the summer of 1965 when I had to leave the band for work reasons. Musically I went in a different direction after that. I saw Martin Mccarty at The Peterborough Folk Club, and I traded in my solid body guitar for an acoustic.” Pete Shaw
