There were Outlaws everywhere in the early 1960s and Norwich was no exception. This popular name was the mantle for many bands. Bob Horton was a pupil at the Alderman & Jex School (now Blyth Jex) and had been singing in pubs since the age of [age required] creeping into the lounge at [venue required] and sang a few songs usually accompanied by a piano player.

One day he plucked up the courage to answer an advert in the evening news asking for a vocalist. He was invited to audition at Malcolm Rose’s house in Albany Road. Surrounded by unknown muscians amongst whom was future celebrity guitarist Ronnie Daring, there in an advisory capacity as opposed to being a member of the proposed band. Bob was asked to sing Roll Over Beethoven after which he was asked to leave the room. The opinion was he would need some work but, you’ve he'd got the job.

The bands first break came when Jerry Welch [confirm], manager of the the Bedford Arms at the time gave the band a slot and after a couple of opening instrumentals and to the biggest cheer of the night Bob took the stage and went into their rendition of Glad All Over

The band managed several prestigious support slots. Bob remembers being in at the start of PJ Proby’s trouser splitting act and supported The Stones at the [venue required] were he say's they were arguing about who was paying for the chips

First titles for the band were Flint & The Outlaws much to Bobs dislike. The band played very few city gigs but were regular performers along the stretch of the East Anglian coast & to advertise their performance would often busk their set whilst cruising the town in a Ford Consul Convertable handing out leaflets. At the turn of ‘63 the band were offered a summers season at [venue required] and it was at this juncture they became known as The Montels

Supports: The Rolling Stones / PJ Proby / Wayne Fontana & The Mindbenders
